American Angler is a group of recreational fishermen who make active use of our surrounding water system and are concerned with the present and future state of these fisheries. Our objectives are to encourage the responsible use of aquatic resources and protection of habitat. We assist where possible in efforts to promote sportfishing and the management of that recreation. We wish to bring the kids back into fishing and educate them on this great aquatic resource we have. Established in 2016 by President Carl Hartmann, we are home off the Jersey Shore. However, we travel and compete throughout the Northeast and elsewhere with all water systems related.

On what was a beautiful weekend in mid October, American Angler membership put on a surf fishing tournament named the American Angler Classic on the beach of Long Beach Island. After switching islands and permits after Hurricane Ian, over 150 members and volunteers attended with a light west wind and nearly 70 degrees. Starting at 7am, the anglers got their lines wet and competed. There were about 30 fish landed in total. Blues, Kings, Skates and sharks. Even a winter Flounder! However After 5 hours the results came in. The over all winner was Patrick Tohill of Bordentown, New Jersey. Patrick won with the largest fish at a 14.50 Blufish. Patrick went home with a lot of prizes valued over $1500.00 Congrats Pat!
On another note and because of Hurricane Ian, we did a head to head tournament within the Classic. This was with the Atlantic City Saltwater Anglers. Almost the same rules but a few changes. The Winter Flounder was eligible! Therefore, Olga Monahan of the AC Anglers won with a 15.50 Winter Flounder. Congrats Olga and she walks away with a $500.00 gift card from Century Rod/Advanced Fishing USA and a set of Costa Delmar Sunglass. We had second and third places in this contest with small Bluefish but I save the best for last. Every kid, including the 6 members of the Tom's River Indians, went home with gift packages worth nearly $50.00 each.
Would like to thank all of the volunteers and sponsors to these events. We plan on doing it all over again in 2023 without Hurricane Ian.
Next up....! The Head to Head tournament on November 5th in Seaside.
